One of the reasons why many couples decide to organise their destination wedding in Portugal is its fantastic climate.
Besides having an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, and considering its mild temperatures, there is really no time that is truly discouraged, because there are always magnificent venues that are more adequate for each season, making the most of the best that the country has to offer.
SPRING (March – May)
The days become warmer and the fields begin to blossom, creating perfect natural scenarios for a destination wedding. Temperatures begin to rise and the days are milder and sunnier. However, it is traditionally a rainy season and may not be the best choice if you are planning a wedding party outdoors, so we propose venues in Palaces with beautiful flower gardens.
Palácio de Fronteira in Lisbon, built in 1672, occupies a quiet location next to the Monsanto Forest Park or Palácio de Setais in Sintra, a former palace transformed into a luxury hotel surrounded by the green of the hills.
SUMMER (June – September)
If you have always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, the long summer days are the best choice for a destination wedding in Portugal. The Portuguese climate in this time of year is hot and dry, with temperatures exceeding 30ºC and even 40ºC on some days and in some regions. And if your intention is to get married on the beach, we suggest;
Areias do Seixo which is a luxurious hotel that combines the green of the countryside and the blue of the sea and a warm design or Comporta Beach, located at the southern end of the Troia Peninsula and considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
AUTUMN (October – November)
Temperatures are traditionally mild and the “golden hour” in this season guarantees you the most beautiful and romantic wedding photos you can imagine!
This is also the harvest season and the perfect time for a wedding in a vineyard. The Douro region, for example, is absolutely magnificent and with the changing colours of the vines, which occurs between October and November, becomes a stunning and unique setting for your destination wedding in Portugal. We suggest Land Vineyards which is a Wine Hotel situated in the Alentejo surrounded by the typical nature of the region and overlooking the castle or Six Senses Douro Valley which is a Hotel situated in a totally renovated 19th century farmhouse located on a hill, overlooking the mountains covered with vineyards and the Douro River.
WINTER (December – February)
Although spring and summer are the most popular times for a destination wedding in Portugal, the truth is that a winter wedding can be magical!
At this time of the year the days are cold, but quite sunny, especially in the southern regions of the country where temperatures are always milder. Perfect environment for venues in Medieval Castles recreating a magical atmosphere of the “Game of Thrones”. We highlight Pousada do Castelo de Palmela, located inside a medieval castle situated on an imposing hill with breathtaking views or the medieval castle and village of Monsaraz, bathed by the fantastic Alqueva lake
And of course, if you choose a date close to the Christmas season, you can still enjoy the Christmas lights and decorations that adorn Portuguese cities and make your destination wedding even more special.
